Bogarde, Dirk (1921-1999)

English actor and writer. He appeared in comedies and adventure films such as Doctor in the House (1954) and Campbell's Kingdom (1957), before acquiring international recognition for complex roles in Joseph Losey's The Servant (1963) and Accident (1967), and Luchino Visconti's Death in Venice (1971). As a writer he was best known for his several volumes of autobiography, including A Postillion Struck by Lightning (1977).

His other films include The Night Porter (1974), A Bridge Too Far (1977), and Bertrand Tavernier's Daddy nostalgie/These Foolish Things (1990). His other autobiographical works include Snakes and Ladders (1979), Backcloth (1986), A Particular Friendship (1989), and A Short Walk from Harrods (1993), and his novels include A Gentle Occupation (1980), Voices in the Garden (1983), West of Sunset (1984), and Jericho (1992). He was knighted in 1992.
