Bogardus, James (1800–1874)

US inventor. Bogardus served an apprenticeship in watchmaking. He patented the ring-flyer for cotton-spinning machinery in 1831 and the first dry gas metre in 1834. He also erected the world's first cast-iron building, a five-story factory at the corner of Center and Duane Streets in New York City. In 1839 the British government accepted his method for the manufacture of postage stamps.
