Bogomil| Member of a sect of Christian heretics who originated in 10th-century Bulgaria and spread throughout the Byzantine empire. They held the dualistic belief that the physical world was created by the Devil. Despite persecution, they were expunged by the Ottomans only after the fall of Constantinople 1453. |
| Their name derives from Bogomilus, or Theophilus, probably a Greek Orthodox priest who taught in Bulgaria 927–950. |

No references found | As a result, Orchard and Graves uncritically interchanged "Baptists" with a host of disparate dissenting groups including Montanists, Novationists, Paulicians, Bogomils, Albigensians, Waldensians, Lollards, Hussites, and Anabaptists. Chapters discuss the remnants of the Bogomil movement in the English Language (including the linguistic history of the word "bugger"), the heresy's views of women, John Wycliffe and the Dualists, Bogomil-Cathar imagery and theology in "The Vision of Piers Plowman", the spiritual kinship between "Paradise Lost" and the secret book of the Bogomils, and more. It is interesting that the Bogomils are associated with the remnants of the Cathars lead by the great female general Esclaramonde du Foix who I think we all could learn a lot more about. |
