Bogorad, Lawrence (1921–2003)

Uzbek-born plant physiologist. Bogorad emigrated to the USA in 1923. A pioneer in the study of chloroplasts (plant cell organelles containing chlorophyll), his early studies of chlorophyll synthesis in green algae contributed to investigations of the biosynthesis of compounds with similar structure, such as haemoglobin and the cytochromes. He performed major research on accessory plant pigments and explored the genetics of chloroplast formation.
