Bogue Sound

Sheltered inlet of the Atlantic Ocean in southeastern North Carolina, 40 km/25 mi east of Jacksonville; length 40 km/25 mi; width 4 km/2.5 mi. It is separated from Onslow Bay by the Bogue Banks barrier island, and connects with the ocean via the Beaufort and Bogue inlets.

A bridge crosses the eastern end of the sound between Morehead City on the mainland and Atlantic Beach (population (1990) 1,900) on the island, and another crosses the western end between Cape Carteret, on the mainland, and the island.

The sound and island are noted for fishing, and the Theodore Roosevelt State Natural Area protects ospreys, snowy egrets, and marine life.
