Hrabal, Bohumil (1914–1997)Czech writer, born in Moravia. He began writing after 1962. His novels depict ordinary people caught up in events they do not control or comprehend, including Ostre sledované vlaky/Closely Observed Trains (1965; filmed 1967), I Served the King of England (1975; published 1986), The Millions of Arlequin (1981), Snowdrop Festivities (1981; filmed 1984), and Too Loud a Solitude (filmed 1994).
