Bolívar

Small province in central Ecuador; area 3,231 sq km/1,247 sq mi; population (1996) 177,025. The capital of the province is Guaranda. The region's economy is based on sheep, cattle, and timber.

Bolívar

Largest state of Venezuela, bounded on the north by the River Orinoco, on the east by Guyana, and on the south by Brazil; area 238,914 sq km/92,245 sq mi; population (1996) 1,142,210. The capital is Ciudad Bolívar, known in former times as Angostura. Forest industries and stock-raising are the major economic activities. Bolívar is the site of Venezuela's principal iron-ore mines, where more than half of South America's total exports of iron ore are extracted. Iron ore is, after oil, Venezuela's second most important export. In the north of the state is the Guri dam and hydroelectric plant. In the centre of the state is the Angel Falls, the world's highest waterfall.

Bolívar

Department in northern Colombia, with a coastline on the Caribbean Sea; area 34,793 sq km/13,434 sq mi; population (1996) 1,702,188. Its capital is the port of Cartagena. The plains of Bolívar are the most important cattle-raising area in the country.
