Bolet, Jorge (1914–1990)

Cuban-born US pianist. He studied at the Curtis Institute from 1926, and with Leopold Godowsky and Moriz Rosenthal from 1932, both virtuosos at the turn of the century. He made his European debut in Amsterdam in 1935, and his US debut in Philadelphia in 1937. He directed Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado in Tokyo whilst on US army service and found post-war fame as a brilliant interpreter of Liszt – he played the piano for the soundtrack of the Dirk Bogarde film of the composer's life, Song Without End (1960).
