Bolingbroke, Henry St John, 1st Viscount Bolingbroke (1678-1751)

British Tory politician and political philosopher. He was foreign secretary 1710-14 and a Jacobite conspirator. His books, such as Idea of a Patriot King (1738) and The Dissertation upon Parties (1735), laid the foundations for 19th-century Toryism.
