Bollandist

Member of a group of Belgian Jesuits who edit and publish the Acta Sanctorum, the standard collection of saints' lives and other scholarly publications. They are named after John Bolland (1596–1665), who published the first two volumes 1643.

The chief publication of the Bollandists, as they are called, is Acta Sanctorum (the Deeds of the Saints).
The need for such help, Martin Davies remarked, is not surprising, because "the Bollandists themselves have confessed that they knew practically nothing" of this saint.
McConica describes the movement of editors from the monastery to universities, carrying the tradition of the Bollandists, the Maurists, and the Benedictines from devoted clergy to more secular disciples.
