Bologna, Concord(at) of

    0.04 sec.

Bologna, Concord(at) of

Agreement reached in 1515-16 that restored papal authority over the French (Gallican) church, but granted the French monarchy a degree of control over church appointments. Signed by Pope Leo X and Francis I, it revoked the Pragmatic Sanction of Bourges of 1438.

The Concord granted the French monarchy a degree of control over French ecclesiastical affairs, allowing the monarch to nominate archbishops, bishops, abbots, and conventual priors. The pope was to confirm the nominations. If two successive royal nominations were found to be invalid, the appointment lapsed to the pope.
