Bolsover

Town in Derbyshire, England, and seat of Bolsover District Council; population (2001) 11,600. It is situated on a ridge of the Pennines, 10 km/6 mi east of Chesterfield. Coal mining used to be the principal local industry, but the local economy has since diversified, with Bolsover, Pleasley Vale, and Shirebrook business parks nearby.

Bolsover Castle was originally built by William Peveril in the 11th century; what remains, however, is a mixture of Gothic and Renaissance styles dating from the 17th century and partly designed by the architect John Smythson. The castle is now owned by English Heritage. St Mary's church has a 13th-century tower.

Nearby Hardwick Hall (1590–97) was designed by Smythson's father, Robert.
