Bolton, Ivor (1958– )

English conductor. He studied at Oxford and at the Royal College of Music, London, and was musical director of the Glyndebourne Touring Opera 1982–92; his operatic productions included The Zauberflöte/The Magic Flute, The Rake's Progress, and La Bohème, and he led Orfeo at the Glyndebourne Festival. He founded the St James Baroque Players in 1983 and directs an annual Festival of Baroque Music. He was musical director of the English Touring Opera 1990–93, with Don Giovanni, Lucia di Lammermoor, and Così fan Tutte/Thus Do All Women; he made his English National Opera Ensemble debut in 1992, with Xerxes, and led Poppea at Bologna in 1993. He has given regular concerts with the London Mozart Players and the English Chamber Orchestra, and was appointed chief conductor of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in 1994.
