Bolton Priory

Priory situated on the banks of the River Wharfe, in the village of Bolton Abbey, North Yorkshire, England. Its Augustinian community was founded in 1120 by William de Meschines and his wife Cicely de Romily, and moved to Bolton around 1154. The nave survives as the parish church.

The chancel, transepts and unfinished tower are picturesque ruins with notable features from the 13th to 16th centuries. The 14th-century gatehouse is now part of the mainly 19th-century Bolton Hall.

In 1539, after the Dissolution of the Monasteries, its lands passed to the Clifford family, and subsequently to the earls of Burlington and the dukes of Devonshire.

Wordsworth founded his poem The White Doe of Rylstone upon a legend connected with the old abbey.
