Bomarzo

Opera by Alberto Ginastera (libretto by M M Láinez, set in 16th-century Italy), first performed in Washington, DC, USA, on 19 May 1967. It was banned in Ginastera's own country, Argentina, owing to alleged obscenities in the ballet - Duke Francesco drinks a poisoned potion, believing it will bring immortality; as he dies, flashbacks of his tormented past and unfulfilled sexuality appear before him. The cantata Bomarzo, for baritone, speaker, chorus, and orchestra, was first performed in Washington on 1 November 1964.
