BombayFormer name (until 1995) of Mumbai, capital of Maharashtra state in west central India. The city's name was officially changed in July 1995, and was renamed Mumbai after the goddess Mumba, the name in the local Marathi language for Parvati, the wife of the Hindu god Shiva. Bombay
