Bona Dea

In classical mythology, a chaste and prophetic goddess worshipped in Rome. She revealed her oracles only to women. She was variously described as the sister, wife, or daughter of Faunus, and was herself called Fauna or Faula.

Her festival was celebrated in the night by Roman matrons in the houses of the highest officers of state. These secret rites took place on the night of 3–4 December and sacrifices were offered on behalf of all the Roman people.
