Bonapartism

Bonapartism

Political system of military dictatorship by an individual, ostensibly based on popular appeal, with frequent use of the plebiscite. Derived from Napoleon's system of rule (1799–1815), the term has been applied to other regimes, for example that of Juan Perón in Argentina. In France, supporters of the Bonaparte family's claims to the French throne during the 19th century were known as Bonapartists.
