Bonavista

Town in east Newfoundland, Canada, 126 km/79 mi northwest of St John's, at the tip of the Bonavista Peninsula, on the southeastern shore of Bonavista Bay; population (1991) 4,600. The main economic activities are cod and salmon fishing and processing. Cape Bonavista, immediately to the north, is the reputed site of the Italian navigator Giovanni Caboto's first landing in 1497. The town was established to the southwest of the cape and became a major fishing centre.
