Bonheur, Rosa (Marie Rosalie) (1822–1899)

French artist and painter of animals, Rosa Bonheur, was committed to a masculine life style, preferring to wear men's clothes and rejecting marriage. Her vivid paintings frequently depict humans dominated by their animal subjects.

French painter. She is best known for her realistic animal painting, including Horse Fair (1853; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York).

She exhibited at the Paris Salon every year from 1841 and received international awards. In 1894 she became the first woman Officer of the French Legion of Honour.
