Bonhoeffer, Dietrich (1906–1945)

German Lutheran theologian and opponent of Nazism. Involved in a plot against Hitler, he was executed by the Nazis in Flossenburg concentration camp. His Letters and Papers from Prison (1953) became the textbook of modern radical theology, advocating the idea of a ‘religionless’ Christianity.

Bonhoeffer fought against his own church's failure to critique a
Mark's National Theological Institute, Australia) presents an intellectual biography and assessment of German Lutheran pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945), whose religious views led him to resist Nazism and to become involved in plots by the Abwehr (German military intelligence) to assassinate Adolf Hitler.
We laud all the resisters, including hundreds of faithful Christian martyrs like Bonhoeffer and thousands of other pastors, priests and lay Christians who were consigned to concentration camps.
