Boniface, St (680–754)English Benedictine monk, known as the ‘Apostle of Germany’; originally named Wynfrith. After a missionary journey to Frisia in 716, he was given the task of bringing Christianity to Germany in 718 by Pope Gregory II, and was appointed archbishop of Mainz in 746.
