Bonnyrigg and Lasswade

Town and former burgh in Midlothian unitary authority, Scotland, on the River North Esk, about 3 km/2 mi southwest of Dalkeith; population (2001) 14,500. Although it is a single town, in postal addresses Lasswade is used for the northern area of the locality, and Bonnyrigg for the southern.

The poet William Drummond is buried in Lasswade church; his mansion at Hawthornden lies 3 km/2 mi southwest of the town. The grave of the politician Henry Dundas is also in Lasswade church. Walter Scott, the Scottish novelist and poet, lived in the burgh from 1798 to 1804.
