book value

book value

Value at which an item is entered into the accounts of a company. Book values can sometimes differ from actual values, especially if the prices of goods are changing rapidly. For example, the book value of a factory owned by the company may be £1 million, although as a result of inflation the market value is £1.5 million. In this case, the book value reflects the historic cost (usually less the amount written off for depreciation) of the asset, rather than its market value.
