Exodus

Second book of the Old Testament, which relates the departure of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, under the leadership of Moses, for the Promised Land of Canaan. The journey included the miraculous parting of the Red Sea, with the pharaoh's pursuing forces being drowned as the waters returned.

The Exodus is also recorded in the Haggadah, a liturgical narrative read at the Seder, a meal held at Pesach (Passover) to commemorate the deliverance. During the 40 years of wandering in the wilderness, Moses received the Ten Commandments (the Decalogue) from God on Mount Sinai and delivered them to the Hebrews.
