Joshua (lived 13th century BC)

In the Old Testament, successor of Moses, who led the Jews in their return to, and conquest of, the land of Canaan. The city of Jericho was the first to fall – according to the Book of Joshua, the walls crumbled to the blast of his trumpets.

Oratorio by Handel (libretto by T Morell), first performed at Covent Garden, London, England, on 23 March 1748.
