Book of Thoth

    0.02 sec.

Book of Thoth

Ancient Egyptian text containing medical knowledge and methods to be used under the auspices of Thoth, the god of wisdom and learning who gave doctors their ability to heal the sick. Written by the priest doctors who dominated ancient Egyptian medicine, it contained detailed methods for treating illnesses by combining practical treatments with prayers and offerings. The procedures had to be followed exactly because of their religious and cultural significance. Although no copies of the book survive, it is believed that the medical treatments and religious rituals detailed in the Papyrus Ebers were taken from the Book of Thoth.

It is the Book of Thoth as Nazi myth that Moses will recuperate as the absolute truth of history.
LaBas, on the other hand, seems to have done so, locating the Book's jeweled holder - only to discover, in a moment of counterepiphany, that the case is empty, the Book of Thoth having presumably been burned by the prudish Hamid, who felt that the Book depicted rites which were "lewd, nasty, [and] decadent" (231).
The absent Text does more than question LaBas's ability as a reader; as LaBas's history of the Book of Thoth suggests, the Text's absence questions the entire notion of textuality held by the West.
