Booker Prize for FictionBritish literary prize of £50,000 awarded annually (from 1969) to a Commonwealth writer by the Booker company (formerly Booker McConnell) for a novel published in the UK during the previous year. The first recipient of the prize in 1969 was P H Newby for Something to Answer For. Other notable winners have included V S Naipaul (1971), Iris Murdoch (1978), William Golding (1980), Salman Rushdie (1981), Kingsley Amis (1986), and Margaret Atwood (2000).
