Boone

City and administrative headquarters of Boone County, central Iowa, on the Des Moines River, 19 km/12 mi west of Ames; population (late 1990s est) 12,390. Machinery, steel fabrications, and plastic signs are among the products manufactured here. There are many children's summer camps nearby.

An 1860s railroad town, Boone subsequently expanded as an agricultural processing and industrial centre. It is the location of a celebrated scenic railway, the heritage of which is celebrated by ‘Pufferbilly Days’, when steam trains operate. Mamie Eisenhower (born Mamie Doud), the first lady, was born in Boone in 1896. Her birthplace is now a museum.

Town and administrative headquarters of Watauga County, northwestern North Carolina, in the Blue Ridge Mountains, on the headwaters of the South Fork of the New River; population (1990) 12,900. It is a mountain resort and lumbering centre, and the seat of Appalachian State University (1899).

The US pioneer Daniel Boone lived in the area in the 1760s.

Boone flourished several years after this meeting, in a vigorous old age, the Nestor of hunters and backwoodsmen; and died, full of sylvan honor and renown, in 1818, in his ninety-second year.
One mistake had been made in not arresting Boone instantly, as he was allowed some few minutes during which he might have communicated with his friend the Lascar, but this fault was soon remedied, and he was seized and searched, without anything being found which could incriminate him.
Like venerable moss-bearded Daniel Boone, he will have no one near him but Nature herself; and her he takes to wife in the wilderness of waters, and the best of wives she is, though she keeps so many moody secrets.
