boot disk

Floppy disk or CD-ROM containing the necessary files to boot a computer without needing to access its hard disk. Boot disks may be used in recovering from virus attacks, when it is not known which files on a computer's hard disk may be infected; in recovering from a system crash which has corrupted existing files; or in correcting mistakes introduced into files necessary for starting up the computer by newly installed software programs.
