Boothia Peninsula

Northernmost part of mainland North America, in the Kitikmeot Region, located in the Canadian territory of Nunavut, extending 275 km/170 mi north into the Arctic Ocean from the area of Spence Bay, between the Gulf of Boothia and Larsen Sound; population (2006) 800. It is settled only in the south, at Taloyoak and is an Inuit community.

The area was discovered in 1829 by the Scottish explorer John Ross, and was at that time the estimated location of the North Magnetic Pole.

Somerset Island, the northeast corner of which contains the Prince Leopold Migratory Bird Sanctuary (1991), is situated to the north of the peninsula.
