Borchgrevink, Carsten Egeberg (1864-1934)

Norwegian explorer. When the Antarctic sailed from Melbourne in 1894 under Captain Christensen, Borchgrevink shipped as an ordinary seaman, and was one of the first men to set foot on the Antarctic continent. In 1898 he was placed in command of Sir George Newnes's Southern Cross expedition, and in 1902 investigated volcanic disturbances in the West Indies.

Borchgrevink was born in Oslo, Norway and educated at Gjertsen College and the Royal College, Tharandt, Saxony. He wrote First on the Antarctic Continent (1901), and The Game of Norway (1920-25).
