Borna disease virus

Disease-causing virus that consists of a single strand of RNA and is distantly related to the rabies virus. It affects a wide range of animals, causing behavioural changes such as increased aggression and excitability. It is fatal in horses.

The virus or antibodies directed against it have been discovered in patients suffering from psychiatric conditions such as depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder. However, a causal link between the virus and these disorders has not yet been proven.
