Borromeo, Federico (1564–1631)

Italian archbishop, nephew of St Carlo Borromeo. He was made cardinal in 1587, and archbishop of Milan in 1595. He was the founder of the Ambrosian Library (Ambrosiana Bibliotheca) in Milan, for which he collected 9,000 manuscripts.

His life is commemorated in Manzoni's I promessi sposi/The Betrothed (1825–27).
