Bosanquet, Bernard (1848-1923)

English philosopher of the British idealist or neo-Hegelian tradition. In his chief metaphysical work, The Principle of Individuality (1912), he stressed the concrete nature of logical thought, in opposition to those who saw in it a process of ever more remote abstraction; to Bosanquet, the aim of logic is to capture truth in its totality.

He was particularly interested in art and aesthetics, which he saw as part of the whole that constitutes the absolute.

He taught at Oxford 1870-80, after which he lived mainly in or near London, engaged in writing and voluntary work for various charitable bodies.
