Bosboom-Toussaint, Anna Louisa Geertruida (1812–1886)

Dutch novelist. Her works, many of them stories of Dutch history, are colourful representations of the manners and customs of the people; they are also remarkable for their historical and psychological insight. Her masterpiece is Het Huis Lauernesse (1841), describing an episode of the Reformation.

She was born in Alkmaar. Among her other works are three stories of the Leicester family: De Graaf van Leycester in Nederland/The Earl of Leicester in the Netherlands (1846), De vrouwen uit het Leycestersche tijdvak/The Women of the Leicester Period (1850), and Gideon Florensz (1855). She was also successful in her modern character novel on the emancipation of women, Majoor Frans/Major Frans (1874).
