Bossier City

City in northwest Louisiana, across the Red River from Shreveport; population (2000) 56,500. It forms, with Shreveport, one of the largest US oil- and gas-producing centres. It has refineries and railway workshops, and manufactures chemicals, fertilizers, cottonseed oil, playground equipment, mattresses, and confectionery.

The site was settled in 1835 as Cane's Landing. The ruins of the Confederate Fort Smith, built for the defence of Shreveport, lie within the city. Barksdale Air Force Base, a major Cold War facility, is to the southeast.
