Botrychium

Genus of about 20 species of fern of the family Ophioglossaceae that grow in temperate and tropical regions worldwide. The common moonwort B. lunaria grows in Britain.

The stem is a subterranean rhizome (underground stem), the roots are fleshy, and the leaves grow so slowly that they take five years to show above ground. Only one leaf matures each year; it is lobed and consists of two parts, a vegetative lamina (blade) and a fertile spike bearing sporangia (reproductive organs).
