Bottesini, Giovanni (1821–1889)

Italian double bass player, conductor, and composer. His works include 12 operas and an oratorio. He wrote Méthode complète de Contre-basse and many pieces for double bass. As a virtuoso of his instrument he was compared with the violinist Niccolò Paganini.

Bottesini was born in Crema, Lombardy. In 1840 he went on an international concert tour which included engagements at Havana, Paris, Palermo, Barcelona, and Cairo, and established his fame as the greatest master of the double bass. He became director of the Conservatory in Parma.
