Bottrop

Industrial city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, in the Ruhr 42 km/26 mi northeast of Düsseldorf; population (1995) 119,900. It produces chemicals, textiles, and electrical equipment.

It developed in the 1860s as a coalmining centre.
