Bolzano

Spectacular earth pillars are found near Bolzano in the Dolomites, northern Italy. The large rocks protect the soft boulder clay beneath from erosion. As a result, there are rock-caps supported by very steep slopes. However, in recent decades earthquake activity has shaken many of the pillars, causing the rocks to fall.

Town in Italy, in Trentino-Alto Adige region, near the confluence of the rivers Isarco and Adige in the Alps; population (2001) 95,000. Bolzano is known as the gateway to the Tyrol; it belonged to Austria until 1919 and its inhabitants are mostly German-speaking. The town is an important agricultural market, and a focus for winter sports. Industries include tourism, distilling, food-processing, and the manufacture of aluminium, pianos, textiles, and car components.

Its position close to the Brenner Pass has been an important factor in the town's prosperity since medieval times, but also caused it to suffer severe damage during World War II. There is a Gothic cathedral, built in the 14th and 15th centuries, and several medieval churches, as well as palaces and monasteries.
