Bouaké

Second most important town in the Côte d'Ivoire, situated in the centre of the country, 280 km/174 mi north of Abidjan; population (1998) 461,600, (2007 calc) 597,500. Established as a French military post in 1899, its industries include cotton textile manufacture and the processing of tobacco, sisal, and rice.

Bouaké is the home of textile and veterinary research institutions and the seat of a Roman Catholic bishop. It is linked to Abidjan by road and a railway that continues north into Burkina Faso.
