Bouhours, Dominique (1628–1702)

French Jesuit and critic. A grammarian and literary critic, he also wrote religious works and letters against Jansenism.

His linguistic views were first expressed in the Entretiens d'artiste et d'Eugène (1671) and then in Doutes sur la langue française (1674), Remarques nouvelles sur la langue française (1675), and La manière de bien penser dans les ouvrages de l'esprit (1687).

He also produced a translation of the New Testament and lives of St Ignatius and St Francis Xavier.
