Boulder City

City in southeastern Nevada, 35 km/22 mi southeast of Las Vegas; population (2000) 15,000. Named after the Boulder Canyon Project, it was established by the US government in 1931 as a residential community for workers building the Hoover Dam and other local projects. It is the headquarters of the US Water and Power Resource Service and the Lake Mead National Recreational Area. Tourism is central to its economy.
