Hoover Dam

The power-generating station at the base of Hoover Dam in Boulder Canyon, Nevada, USA. The Hoover Dam, completed in 1936, is one of many along the course of the Colorado River, providing water and hydroelectric power.

At 223 m/731 ft Hoover is the highest concrete (‘arch and gravity’) dam, and the third highest of all dams in the USA. Behind it lies Lake Mead; this head of water drives hydroelectric generators that produce 1,300 megawatts of power.

Highest concrete dam in the USA, 221 m/726 ft, on the Colorado River at the Arizona–Nevada border. It was begun during the administration of President Herbert Hoover and built 1930–36. Known as Boulder Dam 1933–47, under the administration of Franklin D Roosevelt, its name was restored by President Harry Truman as the reputation of Herbert Hoover was revived. It impounds Lake Mead, and has a hydroelectric power capacity of over 2,000 megawatts.

Denver Water (Denver, Colorado) built the Gross Reservoir Dam near Boulder Dam in 1954, and when originally built, it had plans to add a powerhouse that never came to fruition.
