Boulder

City and administrative headquarters of Boulder County, north-central Colorado, USA, 40 km/25 mi northwest of Denver, in the eastern foothills of the Rocky Mountains; population (2000) 94,600. The site of the University of Colorado (1876) and a centre of scientific research, especially space research. Local manufactures include aircraft, business machines, pharmaceuticals, and chemicals. Agriculture and mining are also important to the local economy. The city is a tourist and New Age centre and a mecca for such sports as skiing; mountain, ice, and rock climbing; skydiving; hot-air ballooning; and kayaking. Visitors are also drawn to the University's annual Shakespeare Festival.

Boulder was first settled by gold miners in 1858; it was incorporated as a town in 1871 and as a city in 1918.
