Bourgeois Gentilhomme, Le

    0.05 sec.

Bourgeois Gentilhomme, Le

Comedy-ballet by the French dramatist Molière with music by Jean-Baptiste Lully, first produced at Chambord, France, on 14 October 1670.

Richard Strauss composed incidental music to a shortened version of Molière's comedy (translated by H von Hofmannsthal), preceding the one-act opera Ariadne auf Náxos, which was first produced in Stuttgart, Germany, on 25 October 1912. Strauss afterwards dropped it for a new operatic first act and made a concert suite for orchestra of the incidental music, adding a minuet by Lully (first performed in Vienna, Austria, on 31 January 1920, conducted by Strauss).
