Bourget, Paul (1852–1935)

French poet, novelist, and critic. His early work was deeply influenced by the determinist philosophy of Hippolyte Taine, but the novel Le Disciple/The Disciple (1889) marks a reaction against determinism. Many of his later novels are coloured by right-wing royalist and Catholic views.

His early criticism (Essais de psychologie contemporaine/Essays on Contemporary Psychology 1882–86) and novels (Une cruelle Enigme/A Cruel Enigma 1885, Un Crime d'amour/A Crime of Love 1886, André Cornelis 1887, Mensonges/Lies 1887) are psychological studies based on contemporary bourgeois life.

During the years 1889–1902 Bourget published more novels and books inspired by his travels, including a journey to the USA which gave rise to Outre-mer: Notes sur l'Amérique/Outre-mer: Impressions of America 1895). He was elected to the French Academy in 1894.

His later novels include L'Etape/The Halting Place (1902), Un Divorce/A Divorce (1904), and L'Emigré/The Weight of the Name (1907).
