Bow, Clara (1905–1965)

US film actor. She was known for her vivacity and epitomized the flapper era. She was called ‘Jazz Baby’ and the ‘It Girl’ after her portrayal of a glamorous flapper in the silent film It (1927).

Her husband, actor Rex Bell, later became Lieutenant-Governor of Nevada.

Bow's other films include Down to the Sea in Ships (1925); The Plastic Age, Kid Boots, Mantrap, and Dancing Mothers (all 1926); Rough House Rosie and Wings (both 1927); Red Hair and Three Weekends (both 1928); and The Saturday Night Kid (1929). Like many actors of her era she had trouble making the change from silent films into ‘talkies’, and repeated scandals marred her reputation. She made her last film, Hoopla, in 1933.
