Bowden, Bertram Vivien

Bowden, Bertram Vivien (born 1910)

English scientist and educationist. He worked with the physicist Ernest Rutherford 1931–34 and subsequently held teaching posts in Britain, did radar research in Britain and the USA, and worked on computers with Ferranti Limited 1950–53.

He became principal of the Manchester College of Science and Technology and dean of the Faculty of Technology, Manchester University, in 1953. In 1964 he was appointed principal of the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, but for a year was minister of state, Department of Education and Science, in the Labour government, and was created a life peer.
